Millions of Americans are affected by anxiety disorder. In fact, research indicates that anxiety disorder affects just under 20% of the American population. Anxiety disorder is a term that actually refers to multiple different diseases that are related to anxiety. 


Psychiatrists have identified multiple different types of  anxiety over time with their research including generalized panic disorder, panic disorder, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic disorder, and others. Anxiety orders were identified in the late 19th century and ever since then psychiatrists have been looking for ways to improve the diagnosis and treatment of them. There are also varying degrees at which the patient may experience these disorders. 

There is a wide array of symptoms that those affected may experience while they have anxiety disorders. One of the most obvious symptoms is an anxiety attack.  These attacks, also known as panic attacks, are short periods of extreme anxiety. Someone experiencing a panic attack may have the feeling that are in extreme danger or are going to die when they are not. 

There are also other symptoms that can indicate that someone may have one of the many panic disorders. These symptoms can appear both emotionally and physically for those that are suffering from anxiety disorder. The most common emotional symptoms are feelings of apprehension or fear, and constantly anticipating the worst happening. Those with anxiety disorders may experience these symptoms seemingly out of nowhere. The symptoms can also be triggered by an event. The event that triggers the emotional symptoms will vary depending on the specific disorder or phobia that the person has.

There are also physical symptoms of anxiety as well. Some common physical symptoms of anxiety are sweating, a racing heart and sweating. Those are mostly short-term physical effects. Some of the most common long-term physical symptoms of any disorder include constant headaches, insomnia, and a feeling of constantly being tired. 

There are ways to treat anxiety disorders. It is recommended that someone with severe anxiety disorder should seek therapy to help alleviate the problem. Psychologists may be able to help patients work through the problem. They may also prescribe prescription medication in more severe cases of anxiety. Those with less severe anxiety may be able to deal with it themselves by taking time to relax everyday meditating and just generally trying to avoid those things that trigger their anxiety. 

Anxiety disorder affects millions of people around the United States. There are many different kinds of anxiety that people can suffer from. Due to advances in psychiatric medicine anxiety  is becoming easier to identify and treat. Those that feel that they may be suffering from anxiety should seek the help of a medical professional to help alleviate their symptoms and eradicate the disease.
